- "You're Mario!!! What are you doing here?! My underlings locked you up in that room. Never mind, I'll deal with you myself! Now I will trample you as you have trampled us!"
- —Goomboss in Super Mario 64 DS
Goomboss, originally named the Goomba King and sometimes King Goomba, is a large, royal Goomba who appears as a boss in a few Mario games. He first appears in Paper Mario as one of the first bosses whom Mario and his Goomba counterpart, Goombario, fight.
Profile[]
Physical description[]
The Goomba King is a large, orange Goomba who wears clothing that is red and white in color, and he sports a large crown on his head.
In Paper Mario[]
At some point before Mario gets to Goomba Fortress, the Goomba King met up with Bowser and was made larger in size (presumably to stop Mario on his quest). Later, the Goomba King makes his appearance before Mario and Goombario after the two defeated his minions, the Red and Blue Goombas. The Goomba King, with his two cohorts engage Mario and Goombario in battle, but were defeated. However, the Goomba King and the Red and Blue Goombas retreat into their fortress believing they can still stop Mario's progress. Unfortunately for them, one of the Goombas left a switch outside that will lower the bridge and destroy the fortress in the process. The Goomba King tries to tell Mario not to press the switch when he sees it but was too late and was sent flying into the background. Kammy Koopa is secretly observing the battle. She reports back to Bowser, who is furious at the defeat. Kammy Koopa, however, knows that the Goomba King will be defeated by Mario easily anyways.
In the ending parade of Paper Mario, Red and Blue Goomba are trying to get the Goomba King out of a tree. He then falls out, and dizzily wobbles off the screen, followed by the Goomba Bros.
Battle[]
In battle, the Goomba King is aided by the Red and Blue Goombas. The Goomba King himself attacks either by kicking Mario or hitting the Goomnut tree dealing 2 points of damage to Mario.
Strategy[]
Goombario himself states that it is recommended to take down the Red and Blue Goombas first since they are weakened from their fight earlier. The Red and Blue Goombas only have 2 HP each, but the fastest way to take them out is to attack the Goomnut tree which sends a large Goomnut dealing 3 damage to not only the Goomba King but the Red and Blue Goombas as well, taking them out instantly. Note that if the Goomnut missed a target for any reason, it will not bounce further and will disappear, so its recommended to attack the Goomnut Tree at the first turn to quickly take out the smaller Goombas. The Goomba King himself only has 10 HP and will go down in no time to Power Jumps.
In Super Mario 64 DS[]
Goomboss is one of three newly added bosses to not appear in the original Super Mario 64, along with King Boo and Chief Chilly. Goomboss in particular is fought within the battle arena in Goomboss Battle, where Yoshi has to fight him to obtain the Mario Key and unlock Mario as a playable character.
During his boss fight, Goomboss spawns Goombas behind him and moves around the stage as the Goombas follow him. To attack Goomboss, Yoshi has to either spit out a Goomba at it or swallow a Goomba to convert into a Yoshi Egg and then throw it at Goomboss. Each time he is hit, Goomboss increases in size, moves faster, and becomes redder to show his increase in anger. Additionally, more Goombas follow behind Goomboss. After three hits, Goomboss is defeated, and the Mario Key is released for Yoshi to collect.
Later on, the player can optionally have Mario, Luigi, or Wario fight Goomboss. In his dialogue before battling Luigi, Goomboss is shown to know him, although Goomboss did not know of Wario beforehand. Any of the three can punch the Goombas into Goomboss to damage him. They can also kick Goomboss's face or back and obtain a Super Mushroom. A difference with the Goombas is that they spawn in front of Goomboss at first and can spawn in front of him and behind him later in the battle. Mario, Luigi, or Wario can hit Goomboss three times to defeat him, like with Yoshi.
In Mario Kart DS[]
Goomboss is the boss of level 3 of Mission Mode, where Toad has to complete three laps of GCN Baby Park before Goomboss does. After each lap, Goomboss becomes bigger and angrier, although Goomboss stops for a few seconds to grow. Goomboss also stops when he spawns a Goomba on the track: one Goomba in the first lap; one or three Goombas on the second lap; or one, three, or five Goombas on the third lap. Goomboss may sometimes throw a Mushroom. If Toad drives into Goomboss, he neither spins out nor loses a balloon, but he is bounced back slightly. On the third lap, Goomboss hops over the center divider, increasing his chances of winning. If Toad is in front of Goomboss, he will not stop to toss Goombas, but instead runs faster to catch up.
Behind the scenes[]
Etymology[]
Goomboss is a portmanteau of the two words Goomba and boss. Its earlier name, Goomba King, refers to its royal status amongst Goombas.

- Goomboss is one of few characters from the Paper Mario series to appear in the main series.
